Rams sweep in first round of division playoffs

WESTLAKE — After a rocky start, the Westlake Rams put it all together to sweep Jennings on Tuesday in the first round of the Division III volleyball playoffs.

“I was hoping we would play a little bit more solid,” Westlake head coach Gloria Fontenot said. “We looked good at times and others really bad.

“It is not just one part of our game. It is just a mental thing and we have to fix this. I thought they did a better job in the second set playing more solid. We just have to keep them focused.”

No. 11 Westlake (20-13) will hit the road on Thursday to take on No. 6 Brusly at 5 p.m. in the regional round with a shot at advancing to the LHSAA state volleyball tournament for the second straight year.

“I think that we are as ready as we are going to get,” Fontenot said. “I like our draw.

“I think it is one of the best draws that we have had since I have been here as head coach. We know that Brusly is very athletic. They have a very strong hitter and role players around her so if we can execute our game plan I think we have a good shot against them.”

Westlake started off with a 6-1 lead thanks to a trio of kills by Jena Johnson but then hit a rough patch. Jennings pulled within four, 8-4, after a kill by Alyssa Le’Blue. Later in the set, Westlake was able to pull away to win 25-15.

Kyra Boudreaux served up an ace that put Jennings up 2-0 in the second set but Westlake went on a 10-0 run take control of the set and cruised to a 25-9 win.

While Johnson ruled the net in the first two sets, senior Jasmine Baker took over in the third set and posted five of her six kills.

Westlake led the entire third set but Jennings did manage to pull within four, 13-9, on an ace by Jaz Sonnier. But there would be no comeback for No. 22 Jennings (16-8) this time as Westlake pulled away for a 25-15 win to take the match.

“The whole season we have been the comeback kids,” Jennings head coach Kristen Anderson said. “We have had several amazing comebacks.

“The first game of the season we were down by 11 and came back and won and we went five sets against Iowa. My team never is never down and out. I think was part of our uphill battles was the mental part of hit. They had seen them before but they came out and gave it all they had and I am proud of them.”

Johnson led Westlake with 17 kills while Kenedee Morris had four kills, 10 assists and four aces. Alyssa Howard recorded five kills, 10 assists and two aces while Morgan Harlow chipped in 11 digs and five aces.
