Pilots have a ton of gadgets at their disposal, each programmed to help you get from point A to point B as safely as possible.
In the clip above, Wired checks out some of the tech that pilots use to keep you safe, especially from turbulence (which is estimated to cost airlines $100 million a year in delays, damage and injuries to passengers).
As a matter of fact, turbulence is the greatest cause of all non-life threatening airline injuries, according to NASA. It averages out to about 58 people every year who are hurt across the U.S. from turbulence-related injuries ― and studies show that turbulence is going to get more serious due to climate change.
So it’s crucial that airlines and their pilots use the latest in technology to keep everyone safe. How do they do it? They use tablets and apps. One of the more helpful tools is a weather viewer that provides pilots with a live turbulence forecast, like a “Waze for the skies,” that helps pilots see not speed traps and cops, but pockets of turbulence in the air, and navigate around them.
