Rust wasn’t an issue for Adam Goree in his return to the pitching mound, as he tossed a two-hit, complete-game shutout in a 5-0 District 3-5A win over Acadiana.
Goree had been held off the mound for a few weeks due to a tight shoulder but showed no ill effects against the Rams, striking out four and walking none in a 73-pitch effort.
“He was outstanding; we wanted to keep him under 75 pitches and almost took him out for the last inning,” said Bucs head coach Glenn Cecchini.
“We needed that win. It was his game, he was in control the whole time. We played really well. We made all the plays. We hit the ball well; we are starting to hit like I knew we would. We are going to peak at the right time, I believe. We want to be a top-four seed.”
The Bucs (25-5, 5-3) sit second in the state power rankings but are third in the district standings, a half-game behind the Rams.
Sam Houston leads with an 8-1 record after beating Comeaux 10-0 Wednesday.
The Bucs took the lead in the third inning when Brogan McNease singled to score Peyton Doumite. Barbe put the game away in the sixth, scoring four runs on an RBI single by Carter Quinn and three-run double by Bryan Lawrence.
Cecchini said he expects his team to finish strong.
“We usually play well at the end of the year and in the playoffs,” he said.
“There is no sense of panic. We don’t make the game bigger than life. When you make it like ‘We gotta win’ — and I used to be that guy — your players play tight. When you play with relaxed intensity, you are going to play better.”
Acadiana (20-8, 6-3) got hits from Alex Courtier and Hunter Tabb.
Lawrence and Ty Manuel had two hits each for the Bucs, who travel to Comeaux today and host Sulphur at 1 p.m. Saturday.
