SULPHUR — With junior southpaw Will Dion in control on the mound, the Sulphur Tors knocked of District 3-5A-leading Sam Houston on Thursday 6-1 at McMurry Park.
Dion, who improved to 3-2 after pitching his third complete game of the season, held the normally hot bats of Sam Houston (8.5 hits per game) to three hits with four strikeouts and four walks.
“Will was ready for the night,” Sulphur head coach Jesse Cassard said. “He asked for the ball so you have to tip your hat to him. Dion has progressively gotten better.”
After Reid Bourque scored on a two-out single by Chris Colley in the third inning, Dion allowed one runner past third base the rest of the game.
Sulphur saw its bats come alive in the fourth inning with four runs to take the lead.
A leadoff single by Chance Stone and two hit batsmen by a normally spot-on Peyton Johnson loaded the bases for the Tors with one out. Senior Brody Strahan, who has had a hot bat lately with six hits in his last five games, roped a two-run double down the left-field line for a 2-1 lead.
“We stayed with it and nobody is giving up,” Cassard said “This team is getting tough.
“Now we know that we can hit a good pitcher. Our guys feel like they can hit now and that is the most important thing. Brody Strahan has stepped up for us continually. He is having a big second half of the season and he is just an awesome kid.”
While Sulphur played one of its best game of the season, Sam Houston struggled, losing for the second time in three games and missing a chance to clinch at least a share of the district championship after an 11-game win streak.
But Sam Houston owns a one-game lead over second-place Acadiana (21-8, 7-3) with two district games left.
“We will get the ship right and we will get to where we need to be,” Sam Houston head coach Chad Hebert said. “We know we had some mistakes tonight that we have to clean up.
“When you play enough baseball, you know somebody is going to pop you. I can’t remember the last time somebody in this district went undefeated.”
Johnson lost for the first time in four district starts after allowing five runs on three hits with one strikeouts and three walks.
Sulphur will travel to Barbe (26-5, 6-3) for a 1 p.m. Saturday game, while Sam Houston will host New Iberia (14-10, 4-5) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
