Nigeria’s recent election was the first to have a sitting president defeated, something former ICFJ Knight Fellow Sunday Dare says came as a direct result of social media acting as a watchdog. In the media’s coverage, Dare says it was easy to see what side the media was on and there was little scrutiny of political advertisements, but social media maintained the integrity of the election by giving citizens a way to participate. When votes were counted at a polling place, results were immediately posted on social media, and citizens were doing their own tallies to ensure official results matched.
