Sam bucks Barbe

Sam Houston blitzed Barbe early and hung on late for an 11-7 District 3-5A baseball win Sunday at Barbe. The Broncos (22-9, 7-4) took a 10-0 lead in the first half of the game, scoring eight runs in the top of the fourth inning. Chris Haggard led off the inning with a home run to left field and later added a run-scoring double off the left field wall. Dayton Dugas had a two-run single in the inning and Dustin Duhon and Jacob Stracner also had run-scoring hits. Corbin Eldridge had a single, double and RBI in the inning. The Broncos sent 13 batters to the plate and pounded out eight hits. “We were swinging the bats well, putting pressure on them and got into their bullpen,” said Sam Houston head coach Ross Blankenship. “We had the big inning. Our guys were having really good at-bats, laying off pitches that were down, drawing walks and getting their pitches — everything you as for as a coach offensively.” Barbe (22-9, 6-5) made it a little interesting from that point, answering with four runs in the bottom of the inning on a grand slam to left by Slate Fuller. The Bucs scored three more in the top of the seventh, getting a sacrifice fly from Shane Selman and runs on a wild pitch and dropped fly ball. However, the Bucs left two runners stranded to end the game and also left the bases loaded in the fourth inning. “They swung the bats, put the pressure on us,” said Barbe head coach Glenn Cecchini. “They hit hard ground balls, line drives. They beat us. They earned it. Last time (a Barbe 5-3 win) they hit a lot of hard ground balls but we made all the plays. We are going through adversity. We have to overcome it and get better. They are a talented team, a senior team. Life is going to knock you down. You have to get back up, answer the bell. The good news is when the playoffs start, it is like a new season. Everyone is 0-0.” Sam Houston had 17 hits in the game. Haggard did not allow any unearned runs in three innings of relief and John Woodson Hays came on to end the game by striking out the only batter he faced. The win was the fifth straight for Sam Houston, which started the district schedule with four losses in six games before finding its groove. “Our team is playing good, we are coming together, swinging the bats,” Blankenship said. “We have to clean things up defensively, but as a whole we are playing well, playing our best baseball of the season.” Barbe rescheduled a makeup game at Carencro from today to Wednesday to allow the Bears to play a makeup game Lafayette today. Dugas finished with four hits to lead Sam Houston. Fuller and Hunter Feduccia had two hits each to lead Barbe.
