Shinzo Abe comes to Washington

Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has an important week ahead of him. Between ironing out a pivotal trade deal and discussing US-Japan defense relations, Prime Minister Abe’s upcoming trip to the USA will be packed with substance. In anticipation of the prime minister’s summit with President Obama and a historic address before a joint session of Congress, AEI scholars outline key priorities for a successful visit.

Japan expert Michael Auslin:

“Mr. Obama needs to put his diplomatic and political capital behind completing the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade agreement, especially now that Congress is likely to give him the coveted TPA. Putting annual US-Japan meetings on a par with the Sino-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue would be another way to show support for Tokyo’s expanding Asian role. Finally, making sure that the revised alliance guidelines come into effect quickly, and then encouraging Tokyo to join other regional security initiatives that America conducts with its partners, especially in Southeast Asia, will help to set the stage for a new era.”

Asia economist Derek Scissors:

“Prime Minister Abe will exhort the Congress to move forward on trade and his visit will intensify discussion of currency as an issue. But the main question is whether Abe and President Obama will announce that the US and Japan have reached a deal in principle on their bilateral issues in the TPP. That isn’t expected but it is possible, and it would mean a TPP deal could be wrapped this summer.”
