Statistics released by the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday show an overall decrease in major crimes in the area. The agency reported a decrease in thefts, burglaries and robberies in the parish for 2014. 2014 saw 608 thefts, 44 burglaries and two robberies; 2013 saw 621 thefts, 52 burglaries and 10 robberies. Sheriff Sam Craft said he was pleased to see the decrease in those areas, which tend to be “very personal to people.” “We will continue to work hard, be proactive, be visible and respond when our citizens call us,” he said. “We’re going to continue to work hard for our parish.” The agency also reported one homicide, 69 sex crimes, 116 incidents of battery and 217 domestic disturbances. The agency received 10,311 calls during the 2014 calendar year, including accidental calls and non-crime-related requests for assistance. Of the calls made to the agency, 2,840 incident reports were filed, according to authorities. The Sheriff’s Office made 997 arrests during the calendar year. The drug task force said it made 141 arrests for drug possession and confiscated $47,205 worth of illegal drugs. The task force also made 23 non-drug-related arrests. Other calls made to the agency included 988 calls for assistance, 32 incidents of unauthorized entry, 571 accidents, 26 incidents of unauthorized use, 391 cases of property damage, 304 cases of improper phone communication or harassment, and 537 calls in relation to a suspicious vehicle or person. The agency’s civil department served 14,634 civil papers, subpoenas and citations.
