On Memorial Day, we honor the lives of military men and women who died in the service of their country.
On this day of remembrance, we can also pause to consider the sacrifices of those who serve today. The military is held in the highest esteem by the American people.
The Gallup Organization has been measuring confidence in the military since 1975. In the pollster’s latest question, 74 percent had a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in the military, making it the top-ranked institution of the 17 institutions Gallup examined.
For those curious about the other institutions in the poll, next in line was “small business,” ranked highly by 62 percent and then “the police” (53 percent). At the bottom of Gallup’s list were “television news,” ranked highly by 18 percent, and Congress, by only 7 percent.
