1. Chart of the Day I (above) shows the top ten most dangerous US occupations in 2013, and the percent of male workers in those occupations. As somebody on Twitter commented: “Notice how you never hear feminists saying, ‘We need more women loggers’?”
2. Chart of the Day II above shows the dramatic drop in active US oil rigs to only 660 last week, the lowest number of rigs since 2010, and down by almost 1,000 from the 1,610 peak in 2014. And yet oil output remains near record high levels.
3. America, Here’s Your Immoral Drug War, Mississippi edition I: The Mississippi city of Richland has a new $4.1 million police station, a top-level training center and a fleet of black-and-white Dodge Charger police cars. All of it was paid for through civil forfeitures of property and cash seized during traffic stops of what police say were suspected drug runners on Interstate 20. Source. That is very, very troubling.
4. America, Here’s Your Deadly Drug War, Mississippi edition II: Two Hattiesburg, Mississippi, police officers were killed last Saturday after a traffic stop turned into an attempted search for drugs and other contraband. Officers Benjamin Deen and Liquori Tate become the 23rd and 24th persons to die in US domestic drug law enforcement operations so far this year. Source.
5. The Uber Effect. Seen the TV show “Carbonaro Effect” where magician/illusionist Michael Carbonaro makes stuff disappear? Well, Uber is making the inflated value of taxi medallions disappear – that’s the “Uber Effect.” USA Today has an article with a headline that says it all — “Once a sure bet, taxi medallions becoming unsellable.”

7. Just One Word: Plastics. Due largely to plentiful and affordable natural gas and natural gas liquids from shale formations, U.S. jobs related to plastics manufacturing are expected to grow by 462,000 (more than 20 percent) over the next decade, reaching more than 2.7 million, according to a new report. “There’s a great future in plastics, Ben.”
