This Monday we celebrated Memorial Day, a day of commemorating those who gave their life in the service of their country. Even as we honor their memory, let’s not forget about the veterans who made it home but experience a traumatic mental state called Post traumatic stress disorder.
Since its official recognition by the psychiatric establishment in 1980, post-traumatic stress disorder has expanded beyond the confines of the clinic. Social observers, for example, find that it has become a way of narrating and framing one’s experience in the wake of a cataclysmic event.
I’ve written widely about PTSD, and had the chance recently to sit down and talk to David Morris, author of the new book “The Evil Hours: A Biography of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder” about PTSD and its influence on modern filmmaking, and conversely, how film has influenced the perception of the condition.
