Rahul Gandhi is back. Or so says the conventional wisdom among commentators who see signs of life in a politician they had recently declared all but dead.
Renewed hopes for the 44-year-old Congress Party vice president may be premature, but they are nonetheless understandable. After vanishing for nearly two months for an unexplained vacation in an undisclosed location, the scion of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty has returned to India apparently determined to battle Prime Minister Narendra Modi. You can hardly blame a party that has spent the past year licking its wounds after the worst electoral drubbing in its history for seeing this as a good omen.
But while Mr. Gandhi appears to have upped his tactical game, the same can’t be said for his long-term strategy. He has now adopted a tone even more stridently antibusiness than the one that helped him lose last year’s election. And for good measure he has thrown in a dollop of old-fashioned anti-Americanism that harks back to a time when an insecure India traced every problem to the mysterious “foreign hand.”
