When Bayer decided to increase diversity on its senior team, instead of bringing in new talent from other companies, Bayer promoted from within. Male managers viewed this as less threatening than a rush to recruit many women from outside. CEO Marijn Dekkers says his advice to others looking to increase diversity is: “Don’t overstretch people too early, or you alienate your majority group, who in the beginning, were very skeptical. You have to think whether it’s the right thing for the people who are given the jobs.”
