Fresh useful insights for people advancing quality, innovative and sustainable journalism

OFF THE TOP

You might have heard: Longtime news agency Reuters reorganized resources and efforts away from columnists to where it sees “promising growth opportunities”

But did you know: For the first time, Reuters will offer news content to web publishers for free (Poynter)
In a shift from previous models, Reuters is making pictures, videos and text available to web publishers for free through Reuters Media Express. Content will be made available on a metered basis, with publishers being allowed to use an allotted portion of the newswire’s content each month. Reuters says the decision comes from a desire to reach more Web users: “As the media industry navigates the unprecedented shift to digital publishing and online news consumption, Reuters is committed to innovating and challenging conventional models in order to help publishers and expose more readers to its award-winning news content.”

+ Noted: Washington Post launches digital vertical PowerPost, centered around a morning newsletter and “focused on the inner workings of Washington’s power structure” (Politico); New York Times launches Trending, a real-time list of the most popular stories on different platforms, as well as in broad categories such as Staying Power for articles that remain popular (Poynter); Five broadcast TV station groups, including ABC, Cox and Hearst, partner for a live streaming local news service called NewsON (Broadcasting & Cable); Medium launches Letters, delivering posts to subscribers via email as well as being published as a post (Medium)

Vox engagement editor: Stop worrying about Facebook’s algorithm and focus on posting what people want to read (Journalism.co.uk)
Vox’s engagement editor Allison Rockey says news outlets should worry less about the Facebook algorithm and think more about what stories their audiences will want to read. To gain an advantage in social media, Rockey says publishers can ensure stories have strong headlines and have a good image, as well as determining the best times to post from analytics. Rockey says: “People spend hours and weeks just completely stressed out about the Facebook algorithm, what is it doing, how do we trick it, how do you get your content out there. Just stop worrying about it.”

OFFSHORE

Major German newspapers sign onto Blendle (Business Insider)
Blendle, the Dutch startup that allows users to pay-per-article, signed up all of the major German newspapers, adding 18 daily newspapers and 15 weeklies. The micropayment model is dependent on well-known publications participating, so the addition of major German newspapers is a big move for Blendle in testing its hypothesis that readers will pay for individual stories. The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal previously signed up to would experiment using the platform.

OFFBEAT

How Bayer set out to increase diversity on its senior team (Harvard Business Review)
When Bayer decided to increase diversity on its senior team, instead of bringing in new talent from other companies, Bayer promoted from within. Male managers viewed this as less threatening than a rush to recruit many women from outside. CEO Marijn Dekkers says his advice to others looking to increase diversity is: “Don’t overstretch people too early, or you alienate your majority group, who in the beginning, were very skeptical. You have to think whether it’s the right thing for the people who are given the jobs.”

UP FOR DEBATE

While news organizations focus on turning readers into revenue, that’s not a concern for Apple with ‘News’ (The Verge)
Apple’s new Flipboard-style News app may offer users better reading experiences, but Nilay Patel says Flipboard and other news organizations are struggling to turn traffic into revenue, which won’t be something Apple worries about. Patel says Apple’s main concern is continuing to sell iPhones, because Apple doesn’t need to make money off News. Patel says: “[Apple’s News] doesn’t seem nearly as threatening, because Apple has virtually no incentive to make money against news the way Facebook does. Apple has $178 billion in the bank; Apple News could lose a million dollars a year for the next five years and it’s not clear anyone would even notice.”

+ Jim Ray says if Apple’s News succeeds, it could be good for publishers: “If News is successful, it means more than another good default app on Apple’s devices, it means tremendously useful data … for other services, like Siri, possibly even available to developers. Then it becomes more than a product but a foundation” (Flicker Fusion)

SHAREABLE

The content that trends on Reddit is often news, especially of the unusual and weird variety (NewsWhip)
Succeeding on Reddit can be difficult because publishers can’t easily promote their own content on Reddit, but according to an analysis by NewsWhip, news stories dominate the most popular content on Reddit. And among news stories, local news stories and weird news are extremely popular on Reddit. NewsWhip says in this regard, Reddit may be closer to Twitter than it is to Facebook: “There’s a much greater focus on the current news agenda, with less lists and quizzes (both very popular on Facebook) featuring.”

+ ClickHole editor Jermaine Affonso explains why the parody site sticks to a serious editorial schedule: “People hear you’re working for The Onion and ClickHole and assume a lot of lax, fun goofing off (and there’s plenty of that), but the place runs because of tight deadlines and a very rigid editorial process” (Fast Company)

+ Facebook publishes a new Instant Article from The Guardian, and The Guardian says they’ll be publishing more Instant Articles “later in the summer” (The Next Web)
