Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has confirmed the death of Nasser al Wahayshi, the leader of its Yemen branch, in a US airstrike. AQAP expert Katherine Zimmerman is available to comment.
The death of Nasser al Wahayshi is another blow to AQAP, but more importantly, to al Qaeda global. Wahayshi’s named successor in Yemen, Qasim al Raymi, will take up the reins and the impact locally will be minimal, even after the recent loss of two other senior AQAP leaders. But al Qaeda is now without a general manager–someone to run its global operations–and the loss will be felt.
The recent series of successful American airstrikes against al Qaeda leadership may seem as though the US is finally doing well against al Qaeda, but much of the group’s strength today is derived from its insurgent forces. And there, as we can see readily in Syria with Jabhat al Nusra, the US doesn’t even have a player in the game.
