Just when you think the Islamic State has sunk to the very depths of human depravity, they manage to sink even lower.
First they released videos showing the beheadings of American hostages. Then they released a video showing a captured Jordanian pilot burned alive in a cage. Then last month ISIS released a video in which they crucified an alleged spy.
Now, in its latest video, ISIS shows the executions of 15 men by three different methods — each more gruesome than the last.
The first group of men are placed in a car. Once they are locked in the vehicle, a masked executioner raises a rocket-propelled grenade launcher and fires it, setting the car ablaze and burning the men alive. The camera shows the men pounding on the windows as they succumb to the flames.
The second group of men are placed inside a steel cage. A crane then lifts the cage, and lowers it slowly into a nearby lake. The men are seen swimming up to the top of the cage gasping for their last breaths before being submerged. ISIS then uses underwater cameras to capture images of the men drowning. The video then shows the cage being raised once again, with the bodies piled one on top of the other as they come out of the water. All are dead except one, who convulses as foam comes out of his mouth. The camera pans on him to show his last agonies.
A third group of men are taken into a field and lined up on their knees, as an ISIS fighter wraps a purple cord around their necks one by one. Moments later, the cord – a detonator – sets of multiple explosions that blow the men to bits. SIS shows the explosion in slow motion so we can see the men’s heads coming off.
There must be a special place in hell for people who sit around and brainstorm even more shocking and horrific ways to kill people. Some think we should purge these videos from the internet. But I believe it is a mistake to avert our eyes. If we avert our eyes from these horrors, then it becomes too easy ignore pure evil that the Islamic State represents. And if we ignore this evil, then we can justify shirking our responsibility to confront and defeat it.
Earlier this year, HBO showed a documentary called “Night Will Fall” about the making of a film directed by Alfred Hitchcock documenting the horrors of the Holocaust. Using film shot by Allied cameramen at Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen and Dachau, the film showed graphic footage of what was found when the death camps were finally liberated. It showed gut-wrenching footage of Nazi prisoners being forced to bury the bodies of their victims, and how locals were brought to the camps to see first-hand the evil that took place in their midst.
In the fight against the Islamic State, we don’t have to wait until war is over to see the extent of the evil we face. We can see it first-hand today. nd we don’t have to wait until our enemies have killed on a scale commensurate with their hatred to do something about it.
