There are many candidates for the Republican presidential nomination. I counted 16 of them if we include only those featured regularly in national polls (and another former governor joined the fray today). That’s a pretty big number, especially if you want all of them to participate in the same debate on the same stage.
Fox News and CNN, hosts of the first two Republican primary debates, have decided to divide the field into two groups. This basically means that a group of 10 gets to be in the A-list debate, while the others are relegated to a separate, earlier debate.
(Let us not forget that there are dozens and dozens of declared candidates! Let’s dedicate a moment to Michael Bickelmeyer from Ohio, who advocates for an orbital weapons platform called “A Gift for Children.” This weapon system would, if I understand correctly, magnify outer atmosphere sunrays by having them pass through a series of magnification lens systems to produce lethal beams that can be used to combat terrorists and drug traffickers or even to eliminate entire countries. It is unlikely that Bickelmeyer will be allowed to elaborate on this proposal in any of the nationally televised debates this cycle, not even in the B-list debates.)
