Lessons for the Obama-Xi summit

Read the PDF.

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s first state visit comes two years after President Obama hosted Xi at the Sunnylands ranch in California for a high-level summit aimed at bridging the gap on a number of points of contention. Unfortunately, the meeting was largely a failure, as evidenced by Xi’s continued, and indeed intensified, efforts to undermine a variety of US national interests.

The lesson? Obama must convey that, unlike after Sunnylands, the United States will impose costs should China continue to step up its aggression abroad and repression at home. If the president doesn’t adopt such an approach, the state visit will mark a new failure in this administration’s China diplomacy.
