The Lake Area Industry Alliance held its 16th annual Chem Expo on Thursday in the Lake Charles Civic Center, showcasing the wonders of science to over 2,600 students from Calcasieu and Cameron parishes.
“Our hope is to be the spark of interest that really captivates our area youth,” said Crystal Briscoe of Sasol. “They are our future.”
Organizers said that nearly every sixth-grade student in the two parishes attended the event, which involved representatives from over 20 LAIA member companies and 400 volunteers.
“The attention given to the students is an effort to spark an interest in science and give them hands-on interaction with basic chemical reactions that occur in their everyday lives,” said Chris Osburn, LAIA Chem Expo chairman.
“The goal is for the students to stay excited about science as they complete middle school, aspire to be a Chem Expo participant in high school and ultimately pursue a degree which will prepare them to work in a science-related field.
