Since Obama became president, Republicans have made significant gains in the number of governorships they hold. On January 26, 2009, Democrats held 28, and Republicans held 22. As of January 2016, Democrats will hold 18 and Republicans 31, for a loss of 10 for Democrats and a gain of 9 for Republicans. Since Obama’s election, 25 governorships have changed parties: 17 from Democrat to Republican and 7 from Republican to Democrat (CA, CT, HI, LA, MN, RI, VT) (Alaska changed from Republican to independent). Of the 31 held by Republicans, 4 are up for election in 2016 (IN, NC, ND, UT). Of the 18 held by Democrats, 8 are up for election in 2016 (DE, MI, MT, NH, OR, VT, WA, WV).
