2016 Data Point: Republican gains, Democratic losses in Congress

It’s no secret that since Obama became president, Republicans have gained a substantial number of seats in Congress, both in the House and Senate. Democrats have lost a total of 79 seats (68 in the House, 11 in the Senate), and Republicans have gained a total of 81 (69 in the House, 13 in the Senate). While Republicans’ gains in the House occurred largely in 2010 with an increase of 64 seats, in the Senate they were slightly more in 2014 (9 seats) than in 2010 (6 seats). But Senate Republicans face a difficult election year ahead, with 24 seats up for re-election compared to Senate Democrats’ 10. (Note: John Boehner’s seat is not included in these calculations because it is currently vacant.)
