GOP ❤️ dictators

It has become voguish to suggest that the world would be a better place with Muammar Qadhafi, Hosni Mubarak, Bashar al Assad and Saddam Hussein back on their thrones. Ted Cruz and Rand Paul are the latest to wax eloquent on the charms of tyrants and despots, but they won’t be the last.

So, in an effort to help everyone sort out how to feel about this novel idea, let’s look at a little loop:

1. DICTATOR RISES TO POWER ON DEATH OF/COUP AGAINST PREVIOUS LEADER (√ Assad, Qadhafi, Mubarak, Saddam, others) ==>
2. TAKES IMMEDIATE STEPS TO CRUSH CIVIL SOCIETY (√ same guys, also others) ==>
3. CRUSHES LIBERALS AND MODERATES AND EXTREMISTS WITH SAME ENTHUSIASM (√ yes, still those guys, others too) ==>
4. MODERATES AND LIBERALS BRING PLAINT TO EU AND US; MANY BEAUTIFUL STATEMENTS FROM A) SENIOR OFFICIALS (Bush administration) B) HUMAN RIGHTS ORGS (Obama administration) ==>
5. ZERO EFFECTIVE ACTION IN SUPPORT OF LIBERALS AND MODERATES (√ basically, everyone) ==>
6. EXTREMISTS GO UNDERGROUND, MEET IN MOSQUES, HOMES AND ONLINE (√ Syria, Egypt, Libya,Iraq, etc) ==>
7. A) CORRUPTION, B) CRONYISM, C) CRUELTY BECOME INTOLERABLE TO THE POPULATION, WHICH RISES UP (√ see Spring, Arab)==>
8. MOST ORGANIZED OPPOSITION ARE ISLAMISTS BECAUSE, SEE 3 ==>
9. WESTERN WORLD HORRIFIED, CLAMORS FOR RETURN TO STABILITY OF DICTATOR ==>

Almost literally, this is how it works.

Shortcuts aren’t effective. Dictators can’t forever oppress their people. The only stable form of government is representative democracy.
