1. Chart of the Day (above). Based on new international oil production data released today by the EIA for May and June, the US produced more total petroleum products in June than Saudi Arabia for the 32nd straight month starting in November 2012. While a decade ago Saudi Arabia routinely produced about 2.8 million more barrels of petroleum products per day than the US, the US now routinely produces about that same amount more than Saudi Arabia thanks to America’s shale oil revolution.

2. Venn Diagram of the Day (above). Do terminally ill Americans have control over their bodies, or does the state? In California, it depends on whether terminally ill patients wants to end their own life or try to extend their lives with experimental drugs.

3. Markets in Everything. Cyberbullying insurance is now being offered in the UK.

4. Apps for Everything. Yahoo hopes to capitalize on the cord-cutting trend and consumers’ growing attachment to streaming video services with the launch of a new app called Yahoo Video Guide. The app will help you find new movies and TV shows to watch on HBO, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and other services, then allow you to launch titles directly in the video apps you already have installed on your smartphone. 5. Crowdfunding’s New Frontier: Fans can pledge money to a specific high school athlete on the UBooster website, and leave notes encouraging him or her to attend a specific school, but the athletes would eventually collect the money wherever they go (after UBooster collects 5 percent). 6. Cartoon of the Day (above). The high cost of government.

7. Antidote to Obamacare? Competitive Market-Based Medicine. In June of 2013, I posted on CD about the $600 all-inclusive flat-rate for any MRI scan at the Milwaukee-based Smart Choice MRI. At the time, I mentioned that the $600 price hadn’t changed in at least six years, and it’s now more than two year later and the price is still $600 for the cost of the scan and the cost to have your scan read by expert radiologists at the Cleveland Clinic. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting today that Smart Choice MRI has raised $6.5 million from investors and is set to open four imaging centers in the Chicago market and will be the company’s first expansion outside Wisconsin. The price? Still $600, compared to comparable MRI exams performed at hospitals using the exact same technology at an average cost of up to $3,000. Need an appointment? Any of the six Milwaukee locations can schedule your MRI as early as this Thursday!

8. Video of the Day (below). From the Australian Taxpayers’ Alliance in response to the proposed multi-million dollar taxpayer bailout of the taxi industry for not being to compete successfully with modern alternatives like Uber. The Alliance produced this video to suggest that the government compensate and subsidize ALL obsolete industries!
