Bishop Keith L. Clark Talks About A Taboo Subject in Church - Sex

It's time to take off the kid gloves when talking about certain 'taboo' subjects in the Black church. We've shunned away from sharing with congregations about life experiences that can really change the lives of people and development them mentally, spiritually and emotionally.

However, there is one preacher-teacher in Oakland, California who is not afraid to speak strongly about one of those subjects head on. Bishop Keith L. Clark, General Overseer of the Word Assembly, A Family of Churches, recently preached a 'series' on the subject "Rethinking Sex - It's Not Just Physical." Would you believe there was a conversation Sunday after Sunday during morning worship services and during weekly bible study about sex? That's exactly what happened for an entire month. The buzz around 'the town', that would be Oakland, was high and many inquiring minds wanted to not only learn more about this subject, but moreso they wanted to see who had the 'boldness' to talk about a topic that for many years in the traditional Black church was not discussed within the confines of the church walls.

Bishop Clark's Rethinking Sex series sheds a biblical and practical light on several key areas and three of his topics were: Sex According to Drano, The Challenge, and Compatibility. The series completely changed the comfortability and level of understanding around such a sensitive issue in the church. Being raised as a traditional Baptist since the age of 10, it took me a moment to settle in my mind that while I, and many others, were assured of our relationship with our Creator, that the very thing God designed for procreation, society has defiled for many years and used it for pleasure amongst many other things. I had to quickly find a way to rewire my thinking to receive the message because I did not want to miss any intrinsic detail of Bishop Clark's teaching moments during these Sunday and bible study 'sex subject' services. The most eye-opening segment of this series was on the topic the 'Challenge'. Here is a snippet: https://youtu.be/L8yKgIFgRt8

The 'freedom' that was felt after hearing this message for not only me but for many in attendance, was an awakening beyond measure and an 'aaaahhhaaa' moment never to be forgotten.

The feedback Bishop Clark received was so overwhelming that he is now writing the book 'Rethinking Sex - It's Not Just Physical' to be released this year.

Another controversial subject in the Black church is around how Christians should live their lives from day to day and the tremendous amount of criticism that happens when those society-imposed standards are not met. Bishop Clark's series Rethinking Christian Living caught the attention of the Black Renaissance show on CBS5/KPIX. The premise was around giving clarity to what Bishop Clark says God's intention on how He wants people to live, which is in abundance. Bishop Keith L. Clark's motto for Word Assembly A Family of Churches in Oakland, California is: We are learning how to live by living what we've learned.
