Randy Livingston, one of Louisiana’s prep basketball legends whose LSU career was hampered by a devastating injury, is returning to the Tigers as an assistant coach.
Head coach Johnny Jones made the announcement Tuesday.
“We are excited about his passion and enthusiasm for the game, and he bleeds purple and gold,” Jones said. “The impact he will have on our players this coming season will allow for continued success and growth within our program.”
Livingston, 41, comes back to LSU from Australia, where he had a scouting service for men’s and women’s prospects.
He will be inducted into the New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame next month. During his career at Newman High School, he shared the national prep player of the year honors his junior and senior seasons — with future NBA stars Jason Kidd (1992) and Rasheed Wallace (1993).
But his college career was hampered after a major knee injury the summer before his freshman season, forcing him to redshirt. The following year he dislocated a kneecap when he was leading the nation in assists.
He played briefly the following year but was still taken in the second round of the NBA draft by the Houston Rockets.
He lasted parts of 11 years in the NBA, but played 203 games with nine teams.
He has also coached in various developmental and summer leagues.
“I’m very excited,” Livingston said in a statement released by the school. “At the end of the day, coming back home was just too hard to pass up. I want to come in and work to help the basketball team win the ultimate prize. I want to blend in with Coach Jones and the staff in trying to achieve great success on and off the court.”
