Prayers and support for area law officers

WELSH — Residents, community leaders and clergy members on Tuesday gathered for a prayer service in front of the Welsh Police Department to show support for law enforcement officers, first responders and firefighters.

“With everything that has been going on, I just wanted to pull our community together,” Mayor Carolyn Louviere said.

“I wanted a time for us to pray for every servant in our community and let them know we back and support them.”

Fire Chief John Hall expressed gratitude for the show of support, saying it’s “the reason why we have such a successful group of first responders.”

Police Chief Marcus Crochet said the show of support for law enforcement has been strong following the deaths of police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge.

“In the last few weeks we have received a lot of support for our police department, not just from people in town, but from all over the place,” Crochet said.

“These guys work hard, and I know you are worried about them. But they are going to be here to make sure you are taken care of, and it helps them to know that people are out there in support of them, as well.”

The department, like others across the nation, has been inundated with food, cards and thank-you gifts, officials said.

The Rev. Alan Trouille of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church urged the group to continue to “pray for the men and women who do so much for us.”

The Rev. Pat Deshotel of First Baptist Church said first responders “have been set apart to help us live in this society, and we are to honor them.”
