or nearly three decades, the Marshland Festival has served as a fundraiser for a variety of Cameron Parish community and service organizations, showcasing the parish’s culture while helping to support its residents.
This year’s festival will be 5 p.m.-midnight Friday, July 29, and 11 a.m.-midnight Saturday, July 30, at the Lake Charles Civic Center. Admission is $10 Friday and $15 Saturday. Children 12 and under will be admitted free.
The entertainment lineup features The Flamethrowers, Keith Frank, John Dale Hebert, Krossfyre, Geno Delafose, Jamie Bergeron and Mo Pitney.
The first three editions of the festival, now in its 27th year, were held in Hackberry. But the event was moved to Lake Charles to handle the increasing crowds.
“Those first few years in Hackberry, it was hot,” said festival chairman Gregory Gray.
“We had some big-name acts, but it was out of the way for people to get to. It has really grown since we moved, first to Burton Coliseum and now to the Civic Center.”
Proceeds from the festival are invested in the community, including schools’ Future Farmers of America and Future Business Leaders of America groups, Gray said.
“We have booths for the Hackberry athletic department, the Hackberry youth organizations ... and for the past seven or so years the Johnson Bayou athletic department has had a booth to raise money,” he said.
“Everything from the festival goes to benefit the youth. It is a blessing to know that everything you do for the festival goes to the youth, to our future.”
Gray said the people of Cameron Parish are proud of their roots.
“We are a rural community; pretty much everyone in the parish knows everyone else,” he said. “Anything that goes on in the parish, the whole parish will support it pretty strongly. We survived (Hurricanes) Rita and Ike. We took quite a beating, but the parish is still there and still strong.”
