SULPHUR — The SPOT Therapy/Billy Navarre Jamboree concluded Friday night with a pair of games featuring four of the area’s largest teams facing off against each other at Matt Walker Memorial Stadium.
Barbe ran away from Westlake with its speedy position players and airtight defense to defeat the Rams 30-0.
“I’m very pleased with the way we played,” said Barbe head coach Mike Cutrera. “Our kids came out focused and just did a good job. There’s still a lot we need to improve on.”
The Bucs scored on their opening possession with a three-play, 38-second drive capped by a 15-yard screen pass from quarterback Gavin Nettles to wide receiver Kirkland Banks.
Banks extended Barbe’s lead late in the first half with a 64-yard punt return in when he strolled nearly untouched into the end zone to give the Bucs a 14-0 halftime lead.
“After that I don’t know if teams will even punt to him,” Cutrera said. “He’s a special athlete.”
Barbe also grabbed two interceptions in the first half but was unable to turn them into points due to penalties and plays in which they took significant losses.
Barbe quickly ran away in the second half with a 68-yard touchdown drive. The Bucs recovered the ball and regained possession at the Westlake 22 on the ensuing kickoff. Four plays later Haroon Wali ran it into the end zone from a yard out for a 27-0 lead.
“There’s things on both sides of the ball and in the kicking game that we do not do well,” Cutrera said. “We’re going to look at the film, point out their mistakes and hopefully get better every week.”
