Two high school baseball players committed this week to play at Louisiana-Lafayette.
Sulphur junior Connor Cooke and Barbe senior Slate Fuller committed to the Ragin’ Cajuns. Cooke was 3-3 on the mound last season, striking out 26 batters in 33 innings pitched with a 2.31 ERA. He hit .323 with one home run and 15 RBIs.
Fuller was named Most Outstanding Player in the Class 5A championship game, in which he was the winning pitcher and hit a two-run single in Barbe’s 5-2 win over Byrd. He finished the season 7-1 on the mound.
“I been having my eyes on ULL forever,” Fuller said. “I heard from a lot of schools, but as soon as (ULL) offered, I committed. It was my dream school. My dad went there; I love the atmosphere and coaches there and I know (current Cajuns and former Bucs) Gunner Leger and Kennon Fontenot. They were seniors when I was a freshman at Barbe and we won a national championship. I feel that (ULL’s) Coach Tony Robichaux is like (Barbe head coach) Glenn Cecchini.”
Fuller, who also plays first base, said the Cajuns are open to allowing him to continue being a two-way player.
“They believe I can help them out both ways, and that is what I would like to do,” he said.
