LAKE ARTHUR — Residents affected by flooding lined up Tuesday to receive help from FEMA and the United Way, which will be provide services 8 a.m.-5 p.m. through Thursday at the Lake Arthur Community Center on Eighth Street.
“We’re here to help the people get back on their feet after being displaced out of the homes, some for nearly a week,” said Wendy Primeaux, United Way’s director of community strategies.
Damage assessment figures for Jeff Davis Parish haven’t been completed, but more than a dozen homes in the Welsh, Lake Arthur and Jennings areas are believed to have some flood damage, officials said.
The United Way and the Southwest Louisiana Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster are directing victims to the community center, where volunteers are distributing food, cleaning supplies, water, toiletries and infant items to those in need.
Less than three hours after opening, nearly 100 residents had already been served as a steady stream of vehicles pulled into the center.
Evelyn Robinson was among dozens of residents seeking aid from FEMA after she lost her car to floodwaters on New Orleans Street. Her home had water underneath it for several days, but none made it into the structure, she said.
“There’s water in the car,” Robinson said. “It came right up to the seats. I’m waiting to see if FEMA can help me do something. I’m back in my home, but I don’t have a car. It’s filled with mildew, water is sitting it in and it smells terrible.”
Those seeking assistance from FEMA should have the following information available: address with ZIP code; directions to property; condition of damaged home; insurance information; Social Security number; and a phone number and address to receive mail.
Victims can also register at 800-621-3362 and DisasterAssistance.gov.
