JAMBOREE: Welsh is top dog, 'Hounds win twice by shutout

WELSH — Welsh, Lake Arthur and Elton got their last chance to see how their teams would fare against competition when they played each other Thursday night in the Jeff Davis Parish Jamboree.

Welsh and Elton got things started. The Greyhounds defeated the Indians 14-0, thanks in large part to an efficient ground game.

After forcing a turnover on downs in the opening drive of the game, the Greyhounds scored on their first play from scrimmage when quarterback Zach Hayes used a draw play to go 35 yards for the score.

“(Hayes) is probably the fastest guy on our team, and he did a really good job with the reads tonight and making some plays with his legs,” said Welsh head coach John Richardson. “We expect him to have a big season running and throwing the ball.”

The Indians found more success on their second drive, but it ended with another turnover on downs, this time on the Welsh 27-yard line.

Welsh once again moved the ball efficiently and capped the 73-yard drive with a 3-yard pass from Hayes to wide receiver Pearse Migl with 25 seconds left to bring the game to its final score of 14-0.

Lake Arthur 21

Elton 0

Elton stayed on the field to play Lake Arthur.

Lake Arthur also implemented a solid run game against the Indians, tallying 137 yards on 19 carries.

“I really didn’t know what to expect,” said Lake Arthur head coach Mark Deshotel. “Overall I’m pleased. We have plenty to fix, but we’ve always got stuff to fix, even when we play well.”

The Tigers struck quickly with a 49-yard scoring drive in which it ran the ball on all eight plays before Trey Hargrave capped things off with a 1-yard touchdown.

Lake Arthur forced an Elton three-and-out that set up a 65-yard touchdown by quarterback Donnie Benoit for a 14-0 lead.

Defensive back Jaron McZeal paved the way for Lake Arthur’s third and final score when he grabbed his second interception and returned it to the Elton 9-yard line.

“He’s definitely plays a big role in our defense and our offense,” Deshotel said. “Unfortunately he had to sit out a bit last year, so this is really his first game play in a while. He responded well.”

Hargrave scored two plays later to seal the victory.

Welsh 14

Lake Arthur 0

Welsh returned to the field to take on Lake Arthur in the final game.

The Greyhounds moved the ball effectively on the ground and limited Lake Arthur to fewer than 30 yards of total offense to win 14-0.

The Welsh win came despite Lake Arthur forcing two turnovers on the Greyhounds’ first and last plays from scrimmage.

“I was pleased with our performance,” Richardson said. “Under the lights with a lot of new guys, we made some mistakes just like we figured we would. But we were resilient, we bounced back and played hard.”
