James Tabary named McNeese's starting quarterback

Asked to evaluate the three-quarterback competition that enveloped most of fall camp, veteran McNeese running back Ryan Ross shrugged.

“I’m rocking with all three of them,” he said Tuesday. “I wouldn’t want be the one who has to make that decision.”

The task fell to coach Lance Guidry, who on Wednesday announced sophomore Arkansas State transfer James Tabary as the Cowboys’ starter for their Sept. 3 season opener against Tarleton State, beating out juniors Grant Ashcraft and Joe Lissard.

Tabary ran with the first team throughout Tuesday’s practice while Ashcraft was with the second team. Guidry, who said Monday he’ll play his backup for at least one series in the first few games, named Ashcraft the backup.

A three-game starter during his redshirt freshman season at Arkansas State, Tabary — a New Orleans native and Holy Cross graduate — threw for 788 yards and four touchdowns.

He announced on Twitter his intentions to transfer on April 20, which was soon followed by a statement dismissing him from Red Wolves’ coach Blake Anderson.

“We have made the decision that it is in the best interest of everyone involved to dismiss (Tabary) from our team,” Anderson’s statement read. “There were inappropriate and disappointing choices made by James, and I am hopeful he will learn from this. While we wish him the best in his future, this is an instance where we simply cannot move forward together. “

Tabary entered what was a two-man race in the fall, wrestling the job away by impressing with a strong arm and astute pocket presence.

“I thought Lissard had closed the gap on Grant a little bit. It was closer at the end than it was at the start (of spring camp),” Guidry said Monday. “Then you add James in there and all of a sudden, everything starts to rise. Everyone starts playing better and so I think the other two were close … But when you threw the third guy in there, all of a sudden everybody got competitive. It’s gotten us better. I feel good right now. I feel real good with two, and pretty good with three.”
