Two residents of a trailer park on East Broad Street were evicted Tuesday after getting 24 hours’ notice. But both are baffled as to why.
White House Trailer Park residents Diana Harmon and David Hanks insist they’ve paid the $550 rent every month. Harmon has lived at No. 7 for almost a year while Hanks has been at No. 10 for four months. Neither has a written lease agreement with owner Allen Cross.
“We pay in cash but aren’t given receipts,” said Hanks. “So we’re screwed.”
Cross said he couldn’t comment on the eviction. His attorney, Skipper Drost, said the eviction was part of litigation between Cross and the renters. He said the lack of a paper trail wasn’t how Cross normally conducts business.
“To my knowledge, this is not the way he does it,” Drost said.
Harmon and Hanks said that they’ve asked repeatedly for repairs to the trailers. In both residences, floors are damaged, sinking or missing in places; moisture and mold can be found throughout; windows are broken or missing panes; electrical outlets spark when cords are unplugged; and the ceilings are sagging.
“This is a shabby hole in the ground,” said Hanks, whose trailer had ant and termite problems, as well as a water heater that he said didn’t work properly.
Hanks said that when he moved in, he’d been told the problems would be fixed as soon as the previous occupants were out, but that they weren’t.
“They have treated us like dogs,” Hanks said.
Harmon said she had fallen through the front porch and that the trailer also has a roach problem and sewage “everywhere outside.”
“It doesn’t make sense,” said Harmon. “The landlord didn’t want to fix anything.”
Cross said he couldn’t comment on previous issues but said he is “working with the city to bring everything up to compliance.”
But that will be after the residents and their belongings are out.
“I’m homeless,” Hanks said. “I’m going to walk along the streets with no food and nowhere to sleep.”
