Junior defensive back Dominique Hill, a reigning First Team All Southland selection, and wide receiver Tavarious Battiste are suspended indefinitely from the team following a violation of team rules that stems back to the end of last season, coach Lance Guidry said Wednesday.
“(They’re) not going to be with us for a while,” Guidry said. “They’ve broken team rules, broken team policies from the end of last year’s season. There’s no questions to be asked about it because I’m not going to tell y’all anything. The statement is what it is, I appreciate it if you wouldn’t speculate on it. I don’t know when they’re going to be back, I’m speculating like everyone else.”
Guidry said it is possible both return this season.
Also chosen as a preseason All SLC selection, Hill led the Cowboys with 11.5 tackles for loss and nine pass breakups last season while starting nine of 11 games. Battiste started four games and caught 28 passes with three touchdowns.
Jones still looking to get ‘back to Ben’
Speedster Benjamin Jones has returned from knee surgery that marred last season, but Guidry’s yet to see him “get back to Ben” in fall camp.
“I think it’s going to take a while, maybe midseason, maybe not even until next year until Ben is back to the old Ben,” Guidry said. “His knee, he tore up a little bit worse than Dylan (Long) did as well.”
Both Long and Jones underwent surgery last fall before their seasons could essentially start. Jones injured himself in an August scrimmage and dressed out for the cancelled game against LSU before electing to have surgery.
Jones was hurt on his first touch of the season — a 42-yard catch and run that ended with him writhing in pain.
“I think for a guy who runs, is a speed guy and has to make a lot of cuts, he comes back slower than a lot of guys,” Guidry said of Jones. “Whereas Dylan Long’s come back quicker. But Dylan’s a one-cut guy, stick his nose in there try to get the first down, slide off tackles. Dylan’s probably at 97 percent right now, I’m feeling real good about Dylan.”
Golden gets acclimated
All-American defensive tackle Isaiah Golden is still in an “acclimation period,” Guidry said, and will likely wear shoulder pads during Thursday’s practice.
Golden participated in just a helmet during both Tuesday and Wednesday’s practice with a lighter, 305-pound frame after his three-month stint in a Texas jail for his role in a 2014 robbery.
“He needs to gain a little bit of weight,” Guidry said. “Hopefully we can get him up to 320 because I think that’s a good playing weight for Isaiah. But he moved really well. He moved probably better than he ever has since he’s been here.”
