McNeese notebook: School declines comment on Daniel Sams, Anthony Yruegas nearing return

Prior to introducing Lance Guidry for his weekly press luncheon, McNeese State spokesman Matthew Bonnette issued a brief statement on behalf of the school, disassociating the current team from former starting quarterback Daniel Sams.

“Daniel is not a part of the 2016 football team, he is not a part of the university,” Bonnette said to the assembled crowd. “So we have nothing to comment on about that issue. Neither coach Guidry, (athletic director) Bruce Hemphill, athletic staff or players will entertain any questions from the media.”

Sams was arrested Saturday afternoon in connection with an Aug. 12 home invasion that left former Cowboy defensive back Aaron Sam dead.

Sams, a Slidell native and Kansas State transfer, faces charges of accessory after the fact to armed robbery, accessory after the fact to home invasion, accessory after the fact to attempted first-degree murder and accessory after the fact to second-degree murder.

As of 2:30 p.m. Monday, Sams remained in Calcasieu Parish Jail on a $200,000 bond.

INJURED ANKLE

Nick Edwards is, again, injured.

Now fully recovered from a concussion sustained earlier in fall camp, the receiver rolled his ankle running sprints last week, Guidry said, and is day to day.

“Just one of those freakish things,” Guidry said. “I think he’ll be a little better today, hopefully we get him moving around and by Saturday he’ll be able to play.”

Even with the injury, Edwards is still listed as the team’s starting H-receiver on the two-deep depth chart. Freshman Parker Orgeron, whom Guidry lauded throughout fall camp, is listed as his backup.

“We’ll just play it by ear,” Guidry said. “I think Parker’s going to play a lot, I don’t know who’s going to get the start — it really doesn’t matter because we want to play a bunch of different wide receivers. So, coach (Kerry) Joseph will do a good job rotating those guys in.”

YRUEGAS’ RETURN

Asked about a timetable for defensive tackle Anthony Yruegas’ return from a knee injury, Guidry cracked an optimistic smile.

“Hopefully next week (against UL-Lafayette),” Guidry said. “But I don’t know, two or three weeks, I guess. I saw him running the other day and he looked really, really good … Possibly next week, we could get him back.”

Yruegas, an 11-game starter last season, sprained his MCL during fall camp, Guidry said, a relief to the coaching staff that at one point thought the junior had “blown out” the knee.

The West Monroe product was not listed on the Cowboys’ two-deep depth chart issued Monday. Instead, Jake Grode was penciled in as a starter, and Kurt Viges was his backup. Neither have started a game in their collegiate career.

SEASON-ENDING SURGERY

Freshman receiver Trevor Begue will undergo season-ending surgery on a torn ligament his right foot Tuesday, he told The American Press.

Begue, a St. Thomas Moore graduate, classified the injury as turf toe. More specifically, he tore the sesamoid phalangeal ligament in the toe and suffered cartilage damage.

Begue is still listed on McNeese’s game roster against Tarleton State.
