New Lake Charles brewhouse and event center quickly transitioning into a local hangout

Crying Eagle Brewing Co.’s new tap room and outdoor garden are open to the public 5-9 p.m. Thursday and Fridays and 2-8 p.m. Saturdays.

The locally owned brewery broke ground on its McNeese Street facility in October of last year and has been producing custom beers its 7,500-foot brewhouse since the spring, said marketing director Krickett Schmidt.

But up until now, the brewery has relied on distributing its canned product to local vendors and hosting private events. Schmidt said that opening up to the public during limited hours will help transition Crying Eagle from solely a production and events space into a local hangout spot.

“We want to get people to just stop in here, have a beer, watch a game,” she said. “We don’t want to just be known as an event hall.”

There’s “a lot of misconception” about what Crying Eagle actually is, Schmidt said. One common mistake people make is assuming Crying Eagle is a restaurant.

Since its primary function is producing beer, it’s not allowed to sell food in house. To make up for this, Schmidt brings in local food trucks during public hours.

Visitors can now enjoy food from local trucks, sample the tap room’s rotating line of beers in its large, two-story tap room and step out into the landscaped beer garden for live music. Schmidt said the brewery brings in live performers every Thursday and Friday.

It’s next big event is the grand opening, scheduled for 2-10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10. Schmidt said the inaugural “blow-out party” will feature the well-known local cover band Flamethrowers and a few opening acts. A ticket to the event costs $20 and includes all-day access, three beers and a complimentary pint glass.

“We’re pumping a lot into it,” Schmidt said of the grand opening. She said that afterward the brewery plan to expand its hours to include 5-9 p.m. Wednesdays as well. Going forward, she said it will respond to the community and “play it by ear” regarding hours and event times.

Crying Eagle is also expanding its distribution within Lake Charles and in other cities. Schmidt said demand for Crying Eagle’s beers from other companies has exceeded expectations.

“We’ve been pretty overwhelmed by how well-received our beer has been,” Schmidt said. She described the three beers the company distribute as “very approachable and very drinkable.”

“We’ve had a lot of people who are just shocked that they actually like it,” Schmidt said.

She said companies in Lafayette have already voiced interest in selling their brews. As soon as Crying Eagle has a good supply for Lake Charles, it plans to branch out to other cities.

Marketing Director Krickett Schmidt said the brewery tries to stay as “local” and “renewable” as possible.

She said the company gets cane sugar and rice for the Chuck beer from local farmers, and that farmers come in weekly to pick up the spent grain for their cattle.

“We’ve even made dog treats out of it,” Schmidt said.

Three beer description

The Chuck: Schmidt described the Chuck as the lightest of the brewery’s three main beers.

“It’s our contender for the Bud Light, Miller Light drinkers,” she said.

She said it’s an American Cream Ale with a refreshing citrus flavor.

Ready to Mingle: Ready to Mingle Belgian Single is a bit more flavorful than the Chuck, Schmidt said.

“A lot of ladies get it who are typically wine drinkers because it’s a little more complex,” she said.

Calcasieu Common: The Calcasieu Common is Crying Eagle’s newest release that they canned and kegged for the first time last week. Schmidt described it as “a hybrid between a lager and an ale” that’s a bit heavier than the other two brews.

Did you know?

The brewery’s name pays homage to Calcasieu Parish. Calcasieu comes from the Atakapan word, “quelqueshue,” meaning “crying eagle.”
