One killed in DeRidder accident

The DeRidder police department is continuing its investigation into a fatal crash that occurred late Monday morning that claimed the life of a motorcyclist, authorities said.

According to a news release, the crash occured just before 11 a.m. along U.S. 171 when a 2002 Ford Explorer attempted to cross the highway from a Circle K gas station parking lot, heading to the Shell station across from it. Authorities stated that the driver of the SUV did not observe a 2004 Honda VT6 motorcycle, which was headed northbound in the inside lane of U.S. 171.

Witnesses stated that the driver of the motorcycle did not have time to stop or avoid the SUV, causing the motorcycle to make contact at the right front quarter panel and windshield area of the vehicle. The driver was ejected and later died after being transported to Beauregard Memorial Hospital.

Deputy police chief Christopher Rudy stated that the driver of the SUV refused medical attention at the scene, and that drugs or alcohol are not suspected. Authorities have not released the identifies of either individual.

The SUV driver was cited for Careless Operation of a Vehicle and No Liability Insurance.
