Police given yoga sessions to improve wellness

Chelsea Boudreaux, director of Yoga Center of Lake Charles, said she wants to give police officers the tools “to allow their minds to relax, their bodies to release and to have everything function as best as it can.”

Less stressed and more resilient officers, she said, will be better listeners, be more productive, show greater empathy and be better decision-makers.

On Wednesday, Boudreaux spent an hour leading Lake Charles police officers through various poses, breathing exercises and meditation. This was the second session of her weekly Peace for Police program, which she conducts free of charge.

“We focus on stretching the body out,” Boudreaux said. “We also focus on the mind and on controlling distracting thoughts.”

Breathing is an important part of yoga, and Boudreaux said people only use about a third of their lung capacity.

“When you have anxiety or stresses or are feeling mentally down, how you breathe will affect the whole makeup of your body,” she said.

Some of the officers in the program are already feeling the positive effects of taking a yoga break.

“It has helped a lot with the stresses of the job,” said Jordan Ashworth, evidence officer.

Jessie Jack, who is also an evidence officer, said she likes the poses but believes the mediation is what brings it all together. “I feel so relaxed and at peace,” she said.
