SW La. schools aiming for another chance at playoffs

Barbe begins its quest for another trip to the state volleyball tournament this afternoon when it visits St. Louis for its regular season opener.

The Bucs are coming off a 31-11 season in which it reached the semifinals of the Division I playoffs, losing to eventual champion Mt. Carmel.

Outside hitter/blocker Koko Daniels, a commit to play basketball at McNeese, returns to lead the Bucs after earning all-state honors from the Louisiana Volleyball Coaches Association last year. Also back are right side hitter Ally Crooks and libero Riley Reed.

“Our strength is going to be being strong on defense,” said Bucs head coach Katie Franks. “We are kind of young with a couple of seniors playing. We will need to come together as a team. At the jamboree (a win over Westlake), I learned that we had some versatile players and that we can fight back. We lost the first set and fought back to win the next two. I like that we were able to come back and get the win.”

St. Louis finished last season at 17-12, reaching the second round of the Division III playoffs. This year’s team will be led by new head coach and former Saints star Elizabeth Thompson.

Westlake went 33-4 last year, reaching the Division III quarterfinals. The Rams must replace two-sport standout Jaden Towner, a Southern University basketball signee. Returnees for the Rams include Morgan Harlow, Jasmine Barker, Taylor Kennedy, Kenedee Morris and Myka Lester.

“Defense is going to be our strength,” said head coach Gloria Fontenot.

“We lost two seniors (Towner and Bethany Bergeron) but it is like having to replace four positions because they both set and were both middle blockers. We are going to focus on improving our offense and hope our defense can pull us through. Against Barbe, we came out really strong, then we got too lax and made errors that cost us. We are young. We need to get some experience and develop some leadership.”
