Transfer QB Tabary shines in 2 minute drill

Transfer quarterback James Tabary marched the No. 1 offense to a 60-yard scoring drive during a 2-minute drill Friday in McNeese State’s final scrimmage of August camp.

Tabary capped the six-play drive with a 24-yard touchdown pass to transfer wide receiver Darious Crawley.

Tabary connected on 3 of 4 passes during the series for 64 yards with two of his completions to preseason all-Southland Conference receiver Kent Shelby who made an over-the-shoulder 30-yard sideline grab to set up the score.

“Throughout camp I thought the defense has had the upper hand,” said first-year Cowboys head coach Lance Guidry. “The offense has been very close. But I thought today the offense put it together and had a better day than the defense.”

The scrimmage covered game scenarios from red-zone situations to third downs and overtimes.

The offense scored seven touchdowns and two field goals in the nearly 2-hour, 100-play scrimmage. A likely eighth touchdown was whistled dead during the third-down situations when Tabary hit receiver Parker Orgeron on a crossing route. Orgeron appeared to have broken free for what would’ve been a 57-yard touchdown.

“He’s a good one,” said Guidry of Orgeron. “He’s going to see some playing time as a true freshman this year.”

Orgeron made two catches, but Kylon Highshaw led the receiving corps with six grabs for 101 yards while Shelby hauled in three passes for 70 yards.

The defense made its share of plays, in particular sophomore linebacker Sage Seay, who led the squad with two sacks while splitting time between the No. 1 and No. 2 defensive units. The defense collected nine sacks and had six breakups.

After surrendering two touchdowns and a field goal in the first three series, the defense settled in to keep the offense off the scoreboard on the next eight series.

“Overall I was really pleased with what I saw this morning,” Guidry said.

The Cowboys will begin their in-season practice schedule on Tuesday afternoon as they prepare for the Sept. 3 opener at home against Tarleton State.
