OBERLIN — The Allen Citizens Organizing Police Support group is hoping to bring law enforcement officials and other first responders and residents together Saturday for a free community event.
“We want everyone to come out and enjoy the day of fun, food and spend time learning what Allen Parish has to offer the residents,” said Allen COPS Director Dori Sonnier.
The event will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at the Allen Parish Civic Center, 609 Tiger Lane, next to the fairgrounds.
State police will have a rollover simulator. There will be a police dog demonstration and a display of police vehicles, an ambulance, fire trucks, a medical helicopter and other emergency vehicles.
“It’s very important that the public come out, especially the youth, to see the positive and very important role law enforcement, firemen and ambulance personnel play in our communities,” Sonnier said.
Activities and games will be available for children, including fun jumps, sand art, face painting and bean bag toss.
There will be informational booths on hospice care, Allen Parish Hospital, the DARE program, and emergency and medical services.
Pork steak plate lunches will be sold for $7.
There will be a raffle for an airplane ride, barbecue pit and a .22 automatic Marlin rifle.
All proceeds from the event will go toward support of law enforcement in Allen Parish, Sonnier said. The group hopes to use the proceeds to provide training videos for law enforcement officers, hold a breakfast with a cop and host a law enforcement banquet.
“Back when Trooper Steven Vincent was killed we very hurriedly put together a day of prayer for our law enforcement, but since then we have been wanting to do more to bring our law enforcement and community together,” Sonnier said.
