Sowela Technical Community College ranked 30th out of 821 community colleges in a recent WalletHub analysis of the best and worst community colleges across the United States.
The rankings were based on cost and financing, education outcomes and career outcomes, according to the analysis website.
Chancellor Neil Aspinwall said Sowela was one of the few Southern community colleges in the top 50 and the highest-ranked Louisiana community college on the list.
“It’s a testament to what we do here,” Aspinwall said. “We can build new buildings; we can improve the campus. Our enrollment grows, but when outside organizations begin recognizing you, you’re doing something right.”
He lauded the faculty and staff for their work, saying that “what they do on a daily basis makes us shine.”
Although Sowela began as a trade school nearly 80 years ago, students can now take accredited courses at the college that can be transferred to universities like McNeese, said Marianne White, head of institutional advancement, alumni affairs and community engagement at Sowela.
Aspinwall reiterated that Sowela is still in the workforce training business, but it is also a community college that has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. “We’re on the same playing field as all the rest of the institutions,” he said.
When it comes to the completion time — or the average time a student can complete his or her degree — Sowela students finish in 2.1 years. Aspinwall said an associate degree typically takes a student 3.6 years to complete.
“We’re very proud of that,” he said. “We’re here for one reason, and that’s our students. Period.”
Louisiana Delta Community College ranked 290th.
