WESTLAKE — Leesville took advantage of Westlake mistakes with lightning-quick efficiency en route to a 42-7 victory Friday night at Max Caldarera Stadium in the season opener for both squads.
Leading 21-7 midway through the third quarter, the Wampus Cats scored touchdowns 10 seconds apart to blow the game open. Cory McCoy capped a 63-yard drive with a 16-yard touchdown run for a 28-7 lead with 7:19 remaining.
On the ensuing kickoff, Westlake’s Brevan Ned fumbled during the return, and McKenzie Jackson scooped up the loose ball and sprinted 28 yards to make it 35-7 at the 7:09 mark.
Leesville’s Daquan Davis ran in from 9 yards out midway through the fourth quarter for the game’s final points.
“I thought our kids played with great intensity all night, and that’s something we really wanted to focus on this year,” said Leesville coach Robert Causey. “When you come into Westlake and beat them, that says something because Westlake has tradition, physical kids, they’re well coached, and they play hard so we were lucky.”
The teams played a scoreless first quarter, but on the first play of the second, Ned threw a halfback pass that Jackson intercepted and returned 35 yards for a touchdown.
Four minutes later, Jackson picked off Westlake quarterback Mark Ashworth and sprinted 80 yards for a 14-0 lead.
“We got three defensive touchdowns with luck,” Causey said. “The ball bounced our way. Without those scores, who knows how the game would have turned out? I know the score’s kind of lopsided, but that’s not a reflection of how well Westlake played.”
The Rams responded as Joseph January returned the ensuing kickoff 51 yards to the Leesville 35, and a late-hit penalty moved the ball to the 20. The Rams needed five plays to score from there, with Ned carrying the final three yards. Jackson Hodges added the extra point.
Ned led the Rams with 18 carries for 60 yards. Ashworth was 7-of-17 passing for 33 yards. January had 156 all-purpose yards.
McCoy pushed the lead to 21-7 3 minutes before halftime with a 6-yard run. He ran for a game-high 178 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. Quarterback Theron Westerchil completed 9 of 14 passes for 98 yards. Jacob Adams was perfect on six PAT kicks.
The stadium was christened with its new name in an emotional pregame ceremony honoring the longtime Westlake coach, who died earlier this year.
