Local 8-year-old donates hair to Wigs for Kids

Darrius Malveaux got a haircut for his eighth birthday.

He has been growing his hair out since birth — never trimmed it once. On Saturday he got his first cut ever, taking off 15 inches to give to Wigs for Kids.

“I want to cut my hair to give it to the kids with cancer,” Darrius said a few days beforehand.

Darrius’ cousin, Brooklyn Vincent, was his inspiration for growing out his hair to cut it. Brooklyn, who was 6 years old and close to Darrius, had leukemia. Darrius made the choice he would continue growing his hair out for her.

A few days after he decided he was going to cut his hair to make a wig for Brooklyn, she died.

Darrius said he felt nervous about getting it cut now, but that he would be happy not to deal with the extra length.

Both of his parents expressed their pride in their son’s choice to give his hair.

“It kind of makes me tear up because what kid, what 8-year-old, is selfless in wanting to do this for someone else,” said Darrius’ mother, Zoe.

His father, Darrell, joked with him: “You’ll go to church now with a fresh haircut.”

They said the haircut makes Darrius look like a different person. Darrius said, “My friends at school are going to be like, ‘Who are you?’ ”

At Smiley’s Barber Shop, Darrius had the 15 inches cut, just hours before his eighth birthday party.

It’s been a few years since Brooklyn died and talking about her still makes him sad, but he is excited about the person who will get his hair and wants to try to contact the recipient one day.

To donate to Wigs for Kids, your hair must be at least 12 inches long and not be chemically treated or colored.
