McNeese notebook: Suspended Dominique Hill now in 'coaching' role; Edwards, Yruegas out against Tarleton State

Trent Jackson can’t specify what makes it so simple.

But when Dominique Hill pulls the redshirt freshman aside, it’s as if sometimes-complex defensive schemes are understandable and the speed of the college game slows just a bit.

“He pulls me aside,” Jackson says. “Tells me ‘If he’s lined up here he’s probably running this. If he’s lined up there, he’s running that.’ He tells me what to look for in (offensive) linemen, how to read the uncovered linemen. He tells me where my help is in coverage. He really breaks it down one position at a time, teaching me where my help is and where to force people into and where not to.”

Now, that’s all Hill can do to aid his team.

Hill and receiver Tavarious Battiste — suspended indefinitely for a violation of team policy that stems back to last season — will be allowed on the McNeese sideline during their suspension, coach Lance Guidry said, beginning in Saturday’s home opener against Tarleton State.

“Dominique’s role right now is to help out like another coach as much as he can and help the younger guys out, because he went through it as a younger guy — his first game was against Nebraska,” Guidry said Monday. “He knows some of these young guys with their first start, he can help them emotionally. He’ll be there to help out and we’ll use him as another coach if need be.”

Jackson, the team’s listed starter at free safety, is one of three players in the secondary to be making the first defensive start of his career. He’s doing so in Hill’s position, a responsibility he says adds no unwanted pressure.

Any he may feel, though, is allayed by his suspended teammate.

“It’s good to know he’s a leader (and) someone we can depend on,” Jackson said. “Somebody that’s not about himself, that’s about the team. (Somebody) that’s not going to let what happened to him get him down. He’s all about the team, all about making us better and helping us win games.”

Edwards, Yruegas out Saturday, expected back against UL-Lafayette

Neither Nick Edwards nor Anthony Yruegas will dress out Saturday against Tarleton State, but Guidry expects both to return next week when McNeese travels to UL-Lafayette.

Edwards, who is nursing a sprained right ankle, watched practice in street clothes again Thursday. Freshman Parker Orgeron is expected to receive the bulk of H-back work in Edwards’ absence.

“We have enough guys at wide receiver to do some matching (on Saturday),” Guidry said Thursday. “We’ll need Nick next week, for sure, because some of the guys that are going to play in this game, they’ll get more reps this game so they’ll be ready. Nick’s going to take away their reps next game … He’ll play next week. He’s close right now, he just hadn’t taken any reps.”

Yruegas sprained his MCL during fall camp, but has been running this week. When he returns against UL-Lafayette, McNeese’s defense will have all its projected starters aside from the suspended Hill.

Lafleur, Sutton redshirting after injuries

Following leg injuries that will sideline them indefinitely, freshmen Alvionski Lafleur and Cyron Sutton will redshirt, Guidry confirmed Thursday.

Lafleur, a LaGrange product, had surgery Thursday to repair a torn meniscus. Sutton has a stress fracture in his lower ankle, Guidry said, but should be running in the next couple weeks.

Guidry said Lafleur is sidelined for six to eight weeks. The duo joins St. Thomas More product Trevor Begue as injured freshmen who intend to redshirt.

Suffering from turf toe in his right big toe, Begue had season-ending surgery Tuesday.
