McNeese Police investigating alleged break-in of Cowboys' locker room

The McNeese Police Department is investigating a possible theft in the Cowboys’ locker room during the first half of Saturday’s season-opener against Tarleton State, school spokeswoman Candace Townsend confirmed after the game.

Athletic director Bruce Hemphill said following the game the school is gathering more information. Reached both during and after the game, the McNeese Police Department directed all questions to Townsend.

Townsend said McNeese officers would interview coaches and players late into Saturday night and a true extent of what was stolen may not be known until, at the earliest, Sunday.

“I’ve been told that there were some items stolen,” Townsend said. “We weren’t able to talk to the team or talk to the coaches because they were trying to get back to the game … It’s going to be a while until we can figure out what happened, what’s missing, and is it isolated or a few things.”

Townsend said when players returned to the locker room at halftime, some said they were missing “personal items,” but could not specify what those items were.

To Townsend’s knowledge, this is the first instance of a break-in to a home team’s locker room at Cowboy Stadium.

Football spokesman Matthew Bonnette said game security consists of the McNeese Police Department, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office and city marshals.

McNeese won the game, 33-3.
