No-no on Lambeau Leap

If the stadium LSU plays in Saturday has a most storied tradition, other than ice, it’s the famed Lambeau Leap. But none of the Tigers better try it as under college rules it would bring a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty. “I promise you that if anybody jumps the Lambeau Leap, they’ll end up with their thumb out to see if they can get a ride home,” LSU’s Les Miles said Wednesday on the Southeastern Conference teleconference. On Monday at least one LSU player, cornerback Tre’Davious White, said if happened to score, the Lambeau Leap temptation would probably be to strong to ignore. But that was before Miles’ threatened to make any offenders hitchhike back to Baton Rouge.

Familiar face

LSU might be the visitors Saturday in Lambeau, but among Green Bay fans the most popular guy at the coin toss may be representing the Tigers. LSU’s guest captain will be Jim Taylor, a Tigers All-American in 1957 who was a mainstay at fullback of the Vince Lombardi dynasty with the Packers in the 1960s. The 1962 NFL MVP, who lives in Baton Rouge, has been back to Lambeau many times since retiring, but surely never thought he’d ever go back with his alma mater. The NFL Hall of Famer, now 80, is one of the select few former Packers honored with his name on the stadium’s Ring of Fame. “I’m looking forward to seeing Jimmy Taylor’s name in the Ring of Honor,” said Miles, adding that he grew up idolizing Taylor and Cleveland’s Jim Brown. Cross-state Wisconsin really has no former Packer to compare with Taylor. Probably the most noteworthy former Badger to play for the Packers was Ken Bowman, a center from 1964-73.

Flashback

Two years ago at Houston’s NRG Stadium, LSU’s 28-24 victory was one of the Tigers’ 24 fourth-quarter comebacks under Miles. The Tigers trailed 24-14 entering the fourth quarter and 24-7 early in the third. The Tigers have 17 players who were on the two-deep depth chart from 2014 who will start Saturday. Another 15 are in the NFL.
