Route set for Re-Thunk Junk Trail

OBERLIN — The route for the inaugural Re-Thunk Junk Trail — a 60-mile-long flea market and garage sale — in Allen Parish has been set. The event will be 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, and will traverse five communities.

“This is going to be good exposure for all our communities,” said Tourist Commission Director Adagria Haddock. “We are going to be bringing visitors in and hopefully help businesses and bring attention to Allen Parish.”

The trail will include the Reeves Town Park and Kinder Livestock Barn on U.S. 190 and Junkers Flea Market on Third Avenue in Kinder. It will run along U.S. 165 to the welcome center and Veterans Memorial Park in Oberlin and the Leatherwood Museum in Oakdale.

Booths will be set up from 10th Street to Seventh Avenue in Oakdale, including First United Pentecostal Church on Sixth Avenue, and on La. 10 to Little Piney Park, off La. 112 in Elizabeth.

Trail maps will be provided at designated sites along the route. Dozens of flea markets, garage sales, arts and crafts vendors, food booths and other activities will greet visitors along the route, Haddock said.

“We have buyers coming from as far away as Oklahoma and Mississippi and northern Louisiana,” Haddock said. “Shoppers and vendors are coming from all over.”

Antiques, repurposed items and crafts will be found in parks, front yards, businesses and parking lots on the route, she said. Booths will feature jewelry, coins, glassware, wooden bowls, plants and clothing. Church and community groups will sell food.

In conjunction with the trail, the Tourist Commission will hold a Convenience Store du Jour Trail. Visitors to area stores will vote on the best boudin, cracklins and chicken along the route.

There is no cost to set up a 10-by-10 booth, but vendors are urged to register with the commission so they can be included on the map. Garage sale permits will be waived for the day.
