Tor upset No. 2 STM

SULPHUR — All week long the Sulphur High School coaching staff talked to the Tors about rising to the occasion, and they did just that on Friday at Matt Walker Memorial Stadium.

After two ties and seven lead changes, the Tors upset Class 4A’s No. 2 team, St. Thomas More, 38-35 to open the season.

“Sunday night we went to the (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) meeting as a team,” Sulphur head coach Jeff Wainwright said. “The main message of the night was ‘Rise to the occasion.’“Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, we just kept talking to the players to rise to the occasion, and tonight they rose to the occasion. Both teams made plays everywhere and it was a big-time game and a big-time atmosphere. I?am 100 percent proud of the coaches and players.”

The Tors looked to be in the driver’s seat after senior running back J’Cobi Skinner capped an eight-play, 50-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown for a 31-28 lead with 6:40 left.

But STM needed one play to regain the lead on an 80-yard touchdown from Nate Cox to Matthew Gautreaux.

The Tors did not give up and methodically moved the ball 80 yards downfield in 12 plays, ending with a 7-yard quarterback keeper by Byron Walker with 3:04 left.

The lead stuck this time as sophomore defensive back Brian Delarosa picked off Cox with 1:36 left and the Tors’ were able to run out the clock.

The Tors gained 316 of their 430 yards on the ground led by Skinner and Willis.

Skinner had 150 yards and one score on 27 carries while Willis had 99 yards on 12 carries, including a 68-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Walker had 67 yards on the ground and 114 in the air and accounted for three touchdowns.

Gabe LeBoeuf led the Cougars with 113 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Cox completed 11 of 22 passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns.
