Volunteers head east to help flood victims

Calcasieu Parish District Attorney John DeRosier will begin leading volunteers eastward today on a three-day project to help flood victims prep their homes for repair.

Operation Flood Zone will target homes in East Baton Rouge, Ascension, Assumption and St. James parishes. DeRosier said law enforcement officers from those areas will help coordinate the efforts of local volunteers.

“What we are going to do is go in and remove everything that has been flooded,” he said. “We will strip the floors, baseboards and the bottom 4 feet or so of Sheetrock. We will also decontaminate the area with a chemical that we will be bringing with us. It should take about three hours per house with a crew of about 20 people.”

DeRosier said that, as of Tuesday morning, more than 200 households were still in need of decontamination and prep work. He said he hopes to do “as many homes as we can between now and Friday evening.”

“When we leave the house, it will actually be ready for rehabilitation and repair,” he said.

Volunteers will leave the area well-supplied, courtesy of donations and funds from the D.A.’s Community Assistance Foundation. On Tuesday, DeRosier accepted a $5,000 check from the LSU AgCenter’s Master Gardener program. He said it was the largest single monetary donation the foundation has received since it began last year.

“Unlike other organizations, 100 percent of the money donated will go into this operation,” he said.

DeRosier said he expects to have about 50 volunteers join the project each day, with most coming from local law enforcement agencies.

“On Thursday, we already have 20 Lake Charles police officers and 25 Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies lined up,” he said. “We also have about 15 from the District Attorney’s Office. But we do welcome any volunteers.”

DeRosier said those interested in volunteering should gather at the Lake Charles Civic Center by 5 a.m. each day. He said the group will travel back and forth via bus, a 15-passenger van and individual vehicles.
